Cultural Significance
This film aims to unpack the internalised and problematic thoughts of believing that an Australian can only look like a certain race. Migration in Australia can date back up to 60,000 years ago, and yet, asking someone 'where they're from' seems to perpetuate this idea that people of colour are outsiders from the country they were likely born in.
This is not to say that we should never acknowledge diversity or that it is inherently problematic to want to learn about someone's cultural background, but it aims to portray how uncomfortable this question can be and perhaps redirect people to start normalising 'What's your cultural background?' as a more appropriate question to ask.
Contemporary discourse surrounding multiculturalism discusses how society often tolerates this concept as opposed to embracing it. This film ideally aims to dissect these thoughts by portraying everyday microaggressions that could indicate some truth to this statement.
