Director's Statement
Growing up, I never really saw many people on screen who looked like me, and for a long time, pursuing a degree in film was simply a pipe dream. I never want to take advantage of my privilege in being here, so I'm thankful to have this opportunity to bring some important yet often untold stories into the spotlight.
I think people often say that representation matters because you never quite forget how it makes you feel seeing yourself on screen for the first time. It quickly became important to me that my capstone pays homage to this feeling of wanting to occupy more space in the film industry to empower minority communities to feel like their stories matter.
I wrote this story because I think there is much to be said about the lived experience as a person of colour, and it felt cathartic being able to control how the narrative was being told. I feel very fortunate that I could bring this story to life alongside my incredible peers who also believed in this cause.
